It's all in your point of view....

This is why I LOVE cameras... and why where you put them is so important to what you get out of them.  This weedy little daisy is tiny... only about 5" tall. And surrounded by very dead grass. Ugh.  Yet shoot it from underneath with an iPhone (cuz no way is my big camera fitting under there!), sky, sunshine (and an ever so helpful dog) in background... and you get a bit of magic.  

Gifts from my garden....

Ok.. so I will never be a great gardener.  I get excited when I see snails on my roses and love finding their vacated spiral homes.  The diversity in colour and pattern is amazing....

This is a painting I thought was finished a few months ago.  Decided to get out the gesso and brushes and give it a massive reworking this week.  Like it much better now.

iPad for Artists Workshop

Wow… what a fabulous workshop.  I had lots of fun  spending the week with a great group of wonderful artists, and sharing the fun of creating on the iPad.  What a creative group!  

Special thanks to Mary Stewart and Vancouver Island Art Workshops.  We are so lucky to have such a wonderful resource right here in our own backyard.  World class workshops, and she keeps us all happy and fed too.  :) 

I have had a number of artists ask me if I will be offering the iPAD FOR ARTISTS WORKSHOP again and the answer is yes.  Not quite sure when but I am hoping to make it happen at some point in the new year.  

Please contact me if you are interested in hearing more about it once I have a better idea of dates and location.

Thank You

As an artist, I frequently hear the words “paint for yourself, not for others”.  For the most part, I have found this to be sound advice.  There is nothing more thrilling for me than that moment when I step back from a finished painting and know that I’ve nailed it.  It’s a high like no other.  

But, there is also something deeply satisfying when I can share this moment with fellow artists, and know that they “get it”.  They know that a lifetime of education, hard work (often solitary) and exploration have gone into creating that finished painting.  They know, because they have been on a similar journey.  And so, while I continue to paint for myself, validation from fellow artists who can look at my work with an educated, critical eye has also become an important part of my process.  

Over the past few years I have discovered, within the FCA, just such a group of fellow artists.  Artists whose work, and work ethic, I admire.  Artists who juried me to Active status, then into Chapter shows, and into shows at Federation Gallery.  Artists who encouraged me to continue, especially on those days full of self doubt when painting for myself just wasn’t quite enough. To have now been awarded signature status by these artists is both a great honour and also great motivation to continue on this solitary, but very rewarding path.  To them I say, “Thank you”.
